Nearly twelve years after the Sept. 11 attacks, a piece of landing gear belonging to one of the planes to hit the World Trade Center has been discovered three blocks from ground zero.

According to the Associated Press, the component is around 5 feet tall and, as per NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne, the piece has a Boeing identification number.

Discovered by surveyors, the landing gear was found caught in between 51 Park Place and 50 Murray Street, reports the New York Times. The area is currently being treated as a crime scene.

Browne further stated that "a decision will be made concerning sifting the soil for possible human remains." According to the BBC, if police were to thoroughly explore the area in search of further evidence and possible remains then some demolition work may need to be done on the two buildings.

51 Park Place is the intended site for Park51, an Islamic community center. Plans for the new center were begun in 2009 and had later attracted a high level of debate due to the close proximity to ground zero.

These are not the only debris from the 9/11 attacks that are still surfacing over a decade later. Reuters reports that 39 more potential human remains were recently located in debris that had been moved to Staten Island.
