He doesn't often acknowledge his personal life to the media or gush about his longtime girlfriend Eva Mendes and their kids on social media, but Ryan Gosling still does have moments where he can't help but express his happiness as a dad.

While promoting his upcoming highly anticipated film La La Land with Emma Stone at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gosling briefly gushed to ET's Cameron Mathison about the family he has been blessed to have with Mendes.

"They're angels. It's the happiest time in my life," he said.

Gosling and Mendes have two daughters together, Esmeralda Amada, who turned two on September 12, and Amada Lee, who was born this past April.

The couple have been extremely private about their life together since first meeting on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011, hardly ever discussing their romance in the press, even when rumors persisted that they had split, or even doing red carpet appearances together. They also managed to extend the privacy each time Mendes was pregnant, keeping the news of first pregnancy a secret for seven months, as well as keeping news about expecting Amada earlier this year private until just a few weeks before Mendes gave birth. News she had already done so didn't break until two weeks after the birth

However, while he is still somewhat private about his life as a dad, Gosling had no problem being open about his upcoming film, which has received a lot of positive buzz ahead of its planned December release.

"I think at their best [song and dance films] can be very emotional for the audience, and we really wanted to make a film that people really wanted to see in the theater," he said. "From what I understand-and I haven't seen it with a crowd yet-but people enjoy the film, but they also enjoy the experience of seeing it with an audience."
