California governor Jerry Brown passed a law this Saturday that if an actor doesn't want to reveal his age related information on any online entertainment database organization such as IMDb, then the website authority would require removing the age details of the actor as soon as possible.

Named as AB-1687, the law clearly stated that various commercial entertainment employment provider websites and online entertainment database portals will be required to remove "certain information regarding the subscriber's age on any companion Internet website under the provider's control if requested by the subscriber." The clear analysis of this law reflects that the websites like StudioSystem and IMDb would require deleting the age details from the profile of any actor if requested by the person.

AB-1687, which will come into force from January 2017, is only applicable to commercial websites which earn revenue by displaying various advertisements and promotional contents or those that receive payments from their subscribers for their services in certain fields. However, the law is not applicable to those web sites which majorly reflect general public information or contents, just like Wikipedia.

The Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, also known as SAG-AFTRA, has welcomed the law with superlative pleasure as they noted that it is a great victory for them and for their prolonged battle against age discrimination in the casting process, a problem which persists with the help of these websites, as reported by The Verge.

The majority of the actors felt joyous after hearing about this law. However, the Internet Association has expressed their disappointment over the law, with the organization's spokesperson saying: "We remain concerned with the bill and the precedent it will set of suppressing factual information on the internet."

Michael Beckerman, the president of the association, also reacted on this matter.

He wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter that the requirement of removal of accurate age-related information across websites will disrupt free speech.According to him the implementation of this law doesn't arise the question of preventing salacious rumors; rather it debars one's liberty to represent basic facts of a person who live in the public domain.Exhibiting such kind of information doesn't attribute any measures to create any kind of discrimination.Internet companies are not responsible for how people use the data and also they shouldn't be punished for the same.

IMDb authorities have yet to react or respond to the passage of this law as of writing.
