Scientists reportedly may have uncovered a permanent cure for people who don't prefer to have gray hair.

According to Medical Daily, the loss of pigmentation to the hair is thought to be the result of a buildup of hydrogen peroxide in the roots of the follicles, causing harmful oxidative stress.

A similar scenario is allegedly linked to vitiligo, a condition that causes patchy discoloration of the skin, which can also result in white eye lashes.

In a recent study, scientists evaluated skin biopsies from a group of individuals who are experiencing vitiligo and found that the patients had minimal levels of an enzyme called catalase, which aids in the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and oxidative stress.

Researchers then treated vitiligo patients with a "pseudo-catalase" cream, which can be activated by the sun. Following the patients' cream application, and time in the sunlight, the pigment was said to return to their eyelashes and skin, reported the site.

Based on the experiment's outcome, researchers feel that a similar topical cream, put on the hair, may have the capability to restore color to hairs that have gone gray.

"For generations, numerous remedies have been concocted to hide gray hair, but now, for the first time, an actual treatment that gets to the root of the problem has been developed," explained Dr. Gerald Weissmann, the editor-in-chief of The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, which published the findings.
