There was little to doubt that Hillary Clinton won the first debate against Donald Trump last week, but as their running mates prepare for their first face-off in Virginia tonight, many are wondering whether Tim Kaine or Mike Pence will be able to claim victory before the night is over.

Both VP Candidates do have some obstacles they need to be prepared to try and overcome during the debate, which could lead to them easily losing if they say the wrong thing, but also have things that could give them an advantage.

For Pence, the biggest issue he has to tackle is of course his running mate, who has been having a bad week since the debate, and more than a year of inflammatory comments to try and defend. It's an absolute uphill battle for him if the debate takes a turn towards questioning whether Trump is genuinely fit to be the President. However, Pence is a former talk radio and TV host-and knows how to spin things and ask the tough questions. Those could benefit him as he tries to make a case for Trump .

Kaine meanwhile definitely has an easier time when it comes to defending his running mate, since Clinton has been less inflammatory, but still has questions surrounding her concerning her honesty and how much she can be trusted. He would need to defend those issues if Pence highlights them, and he likely will. However, he is also considered a decent guy by Washington standards, and his personality could also work in his favor to make him the more likeable of the two.
