Model and actress Angie Everhart has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, her rep confirmed this week.

"Word has been trickling out about supermodel/actress Angie Everhart's health," and she hoped to set the record straight, according to a statement released to E! News. "However, the prognosis is good."

Everhart is due to have surgery on May 14 and afterwards "expects to be back to work and to mommy duties in a few weeks."

The Ohio-born 43-year-old is mother to 3-year-old son Kayden Bobby. She has previously appeared in films such as the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle  Last Action Hero and Another 9 1/2 Weeks, as well as gracing the pages of several Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues. She recently appeared in the film Take Me Home Tonight and on a 2011 episode of the TVLand series Happily Divorced. Her upcoming projects include Blunt Movie, a sketch comedy à la Kentucky Fried Movie where she portrays a supermodel, and the recently completed The Wedding Pact, co-starring Haylie Duff.

Everhart's social media communications prior to her rep's admission of her illness did not suggest any health problems. She tweeted ahead of Mother's Day a special message directed at her son: "I'm reflecting on my life these days... I have been sooo lucky, super happy, but nothing beats being a MOM!! I love you Kayden!!"

Everhart hopes that by making the public aware of her condition, it will "encourage people to learn about cancer prevention, its signs and treatment immediately."

The Mayo Clinic stated that symptoms of thyroid cancer include lumps that can be felt through the skin of the neck, vocal changes, difficulty swallowing and swollen lymph nodes. Causes include radiation exposure and family history of goiter and other genetic causes.

Everhart isn't the first celebrity afflicted by thyroid cancer. Modern Family star Sofia Vergara was diagnosed in 2000 and underwent thyroid removal surgery. Dancing With The Stars host Brooke Burke-Charvet also had a thyroidectomy to remove a benign tumor in 2012. Both women have been in recovery in the time since and have maintained their health by altering their diet and exercise routines.

Everhart, through her rep, gave her thanks and best wishes "[to] everyone who has heard about it and expressed their support."
