Lady Gaga is reportedly playing fashion icon Donatella Versace in an upcoming season of American Crime Story.

Gaga has apparently been asked to play Versace in the third season of American Crime Story, according to a new Us Weekly report. The season focuses on the 1997 murder of Versace's brother, Gianni Versace, by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, with the working title being Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story.

Gaga's casting was first hinted at during Entertainment Weekly's PopFest last Sunday, when executive producer Ryan Murphy spoke about the season. Moderator Tim Stack mentioned that Gaga would make "the perfect Donatella", to which Murphy coyly replied, "Ya think?"

Murphy also expanded on why he thought Gianni's murder would make for a compelling season.

"I was always very moved and freaked out by the Versace assassination, and I thought it was a really great story to do because it's a manhunt season," Murphy explained. "[Serial killer Andrew Cunanan] killed four people and then Versace, and was on the loose. We're exploring the reasons of how he got away with being undetected."

Meanwhile, Gaga has had a strong association with Donatella since 2013, having written a song called "Dontatella" for her 2013 album ARTPOP and starring in an ad campaign with Donatella's clothing company, Versace, in spring 2014.

Filming is set to begin on this third season of American Crime Story in early 2017, along with the second season, which explores the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This marks a very busy year for Gaga, who is set to perform the Super Bowl halftime show, have a starring role in Bradley Cooper's remake of A Star Is Born (which she is also writing music for) and plan her Joanne tour.

Release dates for the second and third seasons of American Crime Story are not yet known.
