Actors Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks to join the big-screen adaptation of fantasy musical Into the Woods, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago).

Pine and Gyllenhaal would be joining confirmed stars Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep, who have already proven their singing talent in movie musicals for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Mamma Mia! respectively.

While it has been confirmed that Johnny Depp will be playing "The Wolf" and Meryl Streep will be playing "The Witch", neither Pine nor Gyllenhaal have been assigned a role yet.

Additionally, neither actor has any movie musical experience so they will be debuting their singing chops for the first time.

However, both actors are well known for their wide range of film genres they've starred in.  Pine has starred in such action dramas as Star Trek and Smokin' Aces as well as romantic comedies like Just My Luck and This Means War.  Gyllenhaal intense thrillers like Donnie Darko and Jarhead while also taking on edgy romantic films like Brokeback Mountain and Love & Other Drugs

Broadway Musical Home's synopsis of the 1987 Steven Sondheim musical is listed as:

"A young maiden called Cinderella, an abstracted boy named Jack, his mother, the giant he upsets, a childless baker and his wife, Rapunzel, a couple of princes, a witch, Little Red Riding Hood, and the wolf all find themselves in the woods, where they are forced to face their fears, and learn a few lessons along the way."

Musical adaptations have had success at the box office in the past.  The most recent success was director Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables, which made almost $150 million in the US and over $400 million worldwide.  Other musical successes include Mamma Mia! and Hairspray, both of which were popular on Broadway.
