Disney Film: 'Moana' Torn Between Positive and Negative Light [VIDEO]
The latest animated film of Disney had a mixed reaction by viewers
Recently, the new Disney Animated Film Moana had been released in cinemas during the Thanksgiving holiday. The movie was culturally base that had featured a mythical adventure in South Pacific islands. As noticed, Moana as a Polynesian Princess is a brown skinned woman with a curly hair who grew up in a tribe near the ocean. While Maui on the other hand, is a demigod of the wind and the sea.
This film had acquired mixed reaction by those who had watched it. Some of the viewers say that the movie is excellent due to its diversity from the other Disney Princesses. Fushion had reported that the Polynesian Princess was seen as a beautiful, independent, brave and strong willed Hawaiian woman who has the passion to serve and save her tribe from the crisis. Because of Moana's characteristics, it shows that she is not a damsel in distress who needs a knight in shining armor to save her.
On the other hand, some activist took the movie offensive due to how Maui looks and how Moana's costume was claimed as racist as mention by The Huffington Post. Recently, Disney had released their new kids' costume which is alike to clothing of the characters. The source had claimed that the costume would be alright as long as children would not demand for brown tights and s Polynesian tattoo just to fit in and look like the Polynesian Princess and the demigod.
Disappointment was vividly observed by some netizens which made one of them say, "My daughter's culture is not a costume". Due to this matter, Disney had given its apology and was forced to retrieve the costumes from their website and stores as stated by HuffPost.
The lead role Moana was voiced by Auli'i Cravalho while Maui was voiced by Dwayne Johnson.
