Peter Vaughan an actor most recently known for portraying the kind and gentle Maester Aemon Targaryen of the Night's Watch on Game of Thrones, has passed away at the age of 93.

According to The Guardian, Vaughan's agent, Sally Long-Innes, confirmed the news, saying he passed peacefully "with his family around him." It is unclear if he had been ill at all.

As an actor, he was known on British TV, with roles in Citizen Smith and Our Friends in the North, as well as Porridge, a 1970s show where he only had three episodes, but still managed to be a stand out.

In more recent years however, he became better known on a global stage for portraying Maester Aemon, the oldest living Targaryen and one of the blind leaders of the Night's Watch, who helped guide characters like Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Samwell Tarley (John Bradley) as they dealt with issues that came from being men of the Watch.

His character passed away during the show's fifth season of old age. His is the only peaceful and non-violent death featured on the show thus far, with most others being killed off in either violent battles, war, or some other means.

One of the actors who did work with Vaughan, 16-year-old Branock O'Connor, who portrayed Olly (the kid character who fans grew to despise after he helped orchestrate Jon's execution, who was later killed off during season 6), took to social media to pay tribute to his former co-star, referencing the famous tribute line characters on the show used when one of their brothers from the Watch died.

"Deeply saddened to hear that Peter Vaughan has passed away at 93. A kind and talented man. His watch is ended x," he wrote.
