Even a movie star like Emma Stone has had to deal with some possibly sexist treatment in her career.

Stone who has made both blockbusters (The Amazing Spider-Man) and critical darlings (Birdman) in her career, recently revealed some of the casual sexism that goes on in Hollywood even in the modern day.

"There are times in the past, making a movie, when I've been told that I'm hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea," Stone revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I hesitate to make it about being a woman, but there have been times when I've improvised, they've laughed at my joke and then given it to my male costar. Given my joke away."

Even on her more serious projects, she suggested that some of her ideas haven't been taken into account.

"Or it's been me saying, 'I really don't think this line is gonna work,' and being told, 'Just say it, just say it, if it doesn't work we'll cut it out' - and they didn't cut it out, and it really didn't work!'" she said.

Now, Stone is getting the last laugh through her critically-acclaimed work in the new musical La La Land. The film, in which Stone plays an aspiring actress who falls in love with a jazz pianist in Los Angeles, has earned the actress rave reviews and a slew of awards attention. Stone has been nominated at the Critics' Choice Awards, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Actress - often thought to be the three biggest Oscar precursors in addition to BAFTA, which announces their nominations in early January.

Stone is thought to be a possible frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Actress, though she faces stiff competition. Natalie Portman, who plays Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie, has been picking up several critics awards (including the Critics' Choice Award) and is certainly a co-frontrunner with Stone, while other contenders like Isabelle Huppert from Elle and Amy Adams from Arrival are in the hunt, too.

It remains to be seen if Stone will achieve Oscar glory late next year, but in the mean time, La La Land will be released nationwide on Christmas Day.
