Canadian singer Alexis Normand will always remember The Star Spangled Banner and she learned it the hard way, after being caught butchering the national anthem.

The jazz performer, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, sang on May 18 at the Memorial Cup hockey game between the Oregon Winterhawks and the Nova Scotia Mooseheads, and only made it through the first verse before things were off the rinks.

Normand got a few words wrong in the beginning and ended up having to restart at the phrase "Whose broad stripes and bright stars." She then trailing off from there on several occasions. She was bailed out by the hockey players and the audience members, who helped her finish the song. A few may have laughed a little, but most seemed to pity Normand's collapse.

The singer told the Toronto Star that her performance was scheduled with little time to spare, and did not allow her to prepare properly.

"I was asked [Saturday] morning and I agreed," she said. "I had learned all the lyrics, but nerves just got the best of me and I got really nervous and it all unwound from there."

To her credit, Normand was much more poised and impressive in her version of her own country's anthem, performing it in both English and French.

The singer apologized for the performance via Twitter.

"I'm embarrassed and deeply sorry," she wrote. "I wish I'd had more time to learn the American anthem. Thanks so much for the crowd's help! #memorialcup"
