Director Steven Spielberg will be producing a live-action series based on the Halo video game franchise, announced at Tuesday's Microsoft presentation.

The announcement of the new series, to be called World of Halo, came as part of the company's presentation of its new gaming system, the Xbox One. It will broadcast exclusively on Xbox Live.

The director said he is a fan of the game and has experience working in the world of gaming, overseeing the launch of the DreamWorks Interactive game studio in the 1990s.

"For me, the Halo universe is an amazing opportunity for the intersection" of "mythmaking and technology," said the director in a video presentation.

Bonnie Ross, studio head of Halo's developer 343 Industries, reiterated this sentiment, saying she anticipated combining "the storytelling magic of television with the interactive innovation of Xbox One."

Halo is a popular first person shooter game. It features the character Master Chief and his artificial intelligence companion Cortana, who take part in a war between humans and a theocratic alien society. The most recent game in the series, Halo 4, was released in November of 2012 and set a record for opening week sales at $300 million.

World of Halo would not be the gaming company's first foray into creating a series for the game franchise. Microsoft and 343 Industries created a web series, Forward Unto Dawn, injunction with the release of Halo 4.

Spielberg's next upcoming production is an adaption of the Stephen King book Under The Dome, to air on CBS in June.
