They had changed their tune about his girlfriend after learning she was pregnant with his child, but following an unexpected tragedy, Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) and Steve (Stephen Nichols) will be forced to once again focus elsewhere as they try to comfort Joey (James Lastovic) on Days of Our Lives.

Their initial reluctance to accept Jade (Paige Searcy) changed when she revealed that she was pregnant with Joey's baby, and the two decided to raise the baby together. After Jade was also disowned by her father, they also accepted her, making sure she understood that she was now a member of their family as long as she wanted to be there.

However, Jade and Joey were handed a devastating blow for New Year's, when Jade miscarried their baby-and the two teens are now devastated by their loss. And while there may be some form of relief on Steve and Kayla's parts because it means Joey won't become such a young father, they know that the news is also the kind that could wound their son so deeply that he once again lands in a dangerous place.

Now, to prevent more situations from happening like his involvement with Ava, his killing her, and his getting shot when he and Jade ran away and started living at her Aunt's commune, Steve and Kayla will step into action, making sure that the heartbreak Joey feels doesn't send him off the deep end and back into such destructive behaviors. And as they comfort him, they may be forced to reexamine how they treat Jade as well, because they have genuinely grown fond of her more recently, but are no longer obligated to care for her now that the baby has died-and they could be forced to decide how to help her as well.

Days of Our Lives airs Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC.
