So what exactly should fans expect from the Carrie Fisher-Debbie Reynolds documentary scheduled to air this weekend?

Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds is a new HBO documentary that offers an inside look into the iconic actresses' special relationship. Now taking on new resonance after passing away within one day of each other, the movie will likely serve as closure to their millions of fans.

Fisher Stevens, the co-director of Bright Lights, appeared on Today Thursday morning to discuss what we'll see in the documentary and his initial reaction when hearing the news of their deaths.

"A lot of the film became about Carrie caring about and caring for her mother... Debbie started filming, and she was fine at the beginning, and then it started to happen, her health," Stevens explained to Katie Couric.

As for his reaction to finding out they had both died during the final week of 2016, Stevens admitted he was shocked.

"[I] fell in love with their relationship, Carrie and Debbie and the mother-daughter relationship and actually the whole family dynamic," he said. "We want people to ... basically to cherish their relationships with their families."

While viewing the documentary having lost both of its stars may be sad, Stevens suggested that there is a lot of light in the film.

"[Carrie] felt like she had to share her mother with the public. She didn't have that intimate time with her mother [as a child]; she was always sharing her," Stevens explained. "They always sang together; they would just start breaking out in song. That was real."

Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds premieres Saturday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. It will then be available to stream on HBO Go and HBO Now.
