Sherlock Season 5 is still not announced, even though the final episode of Season 4 is scheduled in a few days.

The final episode of Sherlock Season 4 will air in four days, marking the end of the popular detective series. But, there is no official news about Season 5 yet and if one goes by what Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss have to say, the future does not appear bright.

In a recent interview, Gatiss said that the fate of the series depends on a lot of things, reports The Hollywood Reporter. According to the creator, it is up to all kinds of factors, scheduling and willingness to do it, ultimately stating that they are just not sure. Months ago, he had said that he has high hopes that Sherlock Season 5 would happen but things have changed and he no longer expresses the same sentiment as before.

Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, also echoed his views saying that he would love to revisit the show but it may take some time before they work on another season again. Notably, the actor had said previously that they never say never on the show. But in the immediate future all of the team has things they want to crack on with and they have made something very complete as it is. So, they will just wait and see.

BBC has said that Season 4 has once again been written by creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. It is closely inspired by the works of Arthur Conan Doyle and will begin with Holmes getting back on the British soil to be with Dr. Watson and his wife Mary. Speaking of Mary, the mystery around her death is only getting deeper. Many believe that it has been faked to save her family.

Well, Screener claims that the curtains would come down on the mystery only in the final episode of Sherlock Season 4.

However, all hope is not lost for Sherlock Season 5 as the series has acquired a cult status and there is a huge fanbase out there that would like to see more of the detective in action. Sherlock Season 4 last episode titled The Final Problem is scheduled to air on Jan. 15.
