HBO dives deep into solitary confinement and supermax prisons in a new documentary called Solitary: Inside Red Onion State Prison.

Director Kristi Jacobson gives viewers and inside look into controversial supermax prisons in Solitary: Inside Red Onion State Prison, a new documentary airing on HBO tonight. The doc zeroes in on the controversial Red Onion State Prison in Wise Country, Va., where prisoners are confined to 8'x10' cells in solitary confinement.

"Drawing on unprecedented, unrestricted access, 'Solitary: Inside Red Onion State Prison' was filmed over the course of one year, chronicling a new reform program intended to reduce the number of solitary-confinement inmates," say HBO. "The recently initiated 'Step-Down Program' has allowed more than 350 inmates a chance to return to the general population. But all too often, after months of solitary isolation, prisoners are ill-equipped to deal with the stresses of being a part of the regular prison population - let alone life on the outside."

The documentary centers on various inmates who have and still currently experience solitary confinement, exploring their respective childhoods and their life in solitary confinement. Corrections officers are also interviewed in the documentary, exploring the psychological toll it takes on them as they perform some of the toughest jobs in America.

Solitary: Inside Red Onion State Prison premieres Monday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. It will also begin streaming on HBO Go and HBO NOW at 10 p.m. If you cannot watch it live, it will be archived on both HBO Go and HBO NOW.
