Kanye West was blasted over his desire to project his new music video onto the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas on May 26.

West had planned to project his music video for New Slaves onto the Alamo. He told his fans to gather at the historic site to watch the viewing according to the San Antonio Express-News. The rapper's intentions fizzled out as San Antonio police officers said that no permit for the projection had been issued. They had threatened to take down the projection if it ever went up but the viewing never materialized as the 11:30 p.m. start time arrived.

The newspaper reported that about 500 ultimately gathered at the site, many of whom were there to protest the publicity stunt.

"We were never asked, and we were never told what was going to happen," said Mark Loeffler, spokesperson for the Texas General Land Office, the Alamo's caretaker. "It's sad that people have such little respect for the Alamo."

Angie Alexander agreed that West's intentions were disrespectful to the history of the Alamo and those who died at the critical moment in history. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar. All of the Texian defenders were killed and revenge was vowed. The Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, marking an end to the revolution.

However, West did have those who came to his defense. West's fans believed that his detractors only thought the projection was controversial simply because he is a rapper.

"It's not vandalism," Michael Gomez said. "It's just an image that's going to power off and then it's gone."

West has encountered similar backlash in recent weeks as his promotional campaign builds for the release of his sixth album, Yeesuz. Former Full House star Candace Cameron Bure blasted the Watch the Throne rapper as committing blasphemy on May 20 during an appearance on Sway in the Morning.

"I think it's more, it comes from a humility point of view. That I would be humbled enough for what Jesus did for me that I don't want to in any way elevate myself or put myself side by side," she said.
