The husband of CNN foreign correspondent Christiane Amanpour resigned as commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a spokesperson confirmed Sunday.

James Rubin's last day was Wednesday, June 29, a year and a half after he was appointed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

He led the Port Authority's security committee and was a member of its operations committee. He was also appointed by Cuomo to be the chief advisor to the state's Empire State Development Corporation, the agency that leads New York's economic development efforts.

Rubin served as the State Department's chief spokesman under President Bill Clinton. Before entering his government position, he was a journalist and professor at the London School of Economics. He stepped down as an editor of the Bloomberg News opinion section in September of 2011 after clashing with co-workers, according to The New York Times. He was a news anchor and commentator for Sky News from 2005 to 2007 and also taught at Columbia University.

Rubin said in a June 1 interview that he will move to London with his wife and son. He will be a scholar in residence at Oxford University's Rothermere American Institute and plans to write a book about America's use of military force abroad. He said on June 1 he would be leaving for London in "a matter of days."

Amanpour's position with CNN will not change with her family's move to London and she will continue to host Amanpour, a daily current events program on CNN International.

The couple married in 1998.
