Henry Cavill had to hit the gym with a vengeance in order to prepare for his role as the Man of Steel.

The actor previously admitted to being called "Fat Cavill" as a child, but also stated that he had lost weight and toned up for previous films, such as The Immortals. Unfortunately for the British actor, bulking up while staying trim proved to be a herculean feat.

"It was getting up at the crack of dawn, trying to find time to eat before training and time to digest before going into the gym," the 30-year-old actor told Access Hollywood.

One of the men who trained the newest Superman was the 300 trainer Mark Twight, according to Eden Lifestyle. The pair employed circuit training in an effort combined with a high calorie diet in order to help Cavill gain muscle.

"I'm on 5000 calories a day... You've got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs... you've gotta keep your hunger levels going," Cavill told Total Film. "I'm training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman."

Fans will see if his hard work paid off when Man of Steel flies into theaters June 14.
