Patti LuPone revealed recently new information into the character she'll be playing on the third season of American Horror Story.

She told Broadway.com on June 3 that even though the third season is dubbed American Horror Story: Coven, she will not be playing a witch. Instead, the theater actress will be playing "the personification of the religious right." LuPone likened the character to Piper Laurie's Margaret White character in Carrie.

LuPone's run on the show's third season will only be a guest stint, according to the report, though it is not clear if LuPone confirmed that herself.

American Horror Story: Coven stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, and Lily Rabe returning for season 3 after playing different characters in seasons 1 and 2. Taissa Farmiga will return after not appearing in season 2.

LuPone isn't the only high profile actress to join the show in its third season. Kathy Bates, Gabourey Sidibe, Angela Bassett and Emma Roberts have all announced that they in the show's third season.

LuPone said that she was very excited to be working with the accomplished actresses.

In other American Horror Story news, Jessica Lange revealed in a video chat with GoldDerby.com's Tom O'Neil on May 31 that she doesn't know much about the new season. She said she received the first two scripts already, which she intended to read "either today or tomorrow."

"We've set it in New Orleans," she said, "It's about witches - it's about witchcraft. Other than that I honestly don't know much more about it."

O'Neil pointed out that even if Lange did know details about the third season, things would likely change drastically, considering how different Lange's nun character ended up being from creator Ryan Murphy's original description.

Lange also revealed what she would like from American Horror Story going forward: "If I had my wish, we would move further and further into the area of psychological horror."

American Horror Story: Coven is expected to premiere in October of 2013.
