Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie witnessed a horrifying suicide attempt during a live TODAY morning show broadcast on Thursday.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., an unidentified man in his 50s began to slit his own wrists with a box cutter in front of the two co-anchors. They were discussing the day's topics at Rockefeller Center Plaza in New York City on June 6.

As the morning show attendee began to shed blood on the sidewalk, Lauer and Guthrie were quickly rushed inside to continue reporting as NBC security grabbed the man and knocked him to the ground before he could cause more harm. The man in question was rushed to St. Luke's, a local hospital, by paramedics after the frenzy.

Lauer and Guthrie re-appeared on the live show shortly after 8 a.m. and thanked local authorities for getting the situation under control. The 55-year-old talk show veteran said in the indoor broadcast that the man said he had no intentions of harming anyone other than himself.

Lauer also shared the news with his followers on Twitter.

"All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD," he wrote on the social media site.

Shortly after he explained the first tweet for those that did not know what happened: "Sorry, a man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He is under police control. In custody."

The New York Police Department confirmed the report to Mail Online, adding that the man may have also cut his arms. The incident did not occur on-camera.
