Carey Mulligan has emerged as the front-runner to play former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in the upcoming biopic Rodham.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported on Wednesday citing several sources who say she is the producers' top choice for the role.

Mulligan had not been among the previous names listed as being in contention for the role, considered to be one of the most coveted among young Hollywood actresses. The names previously mentioned for the role included Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, and Emma Stone.

It is not confirmed that Mulligan has the role yet, but the actress is due to meet with the film's attached director, indie filmmaker James Ponsoldt.

Rodham is based on a script by screenwriter Young Il Kim, which appeared on the 2012 Black List, the collection of each year's top-rated unproduced scripts.

The film will focus on Clinton's earlier years as a lawyer, specifically her time working with the House Judiciary Committee as they attempt to impeach President Richard Nixon. It will also discuss her personal life, as she tries reconcile her burgeoning career with her relationship with the  future President Bill Clinton.

The actress most recently appeared in the Baz Luhrmann adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, where she played Daisy Buchanan. She will next appear in the upcoming Coen Brothers' 60s-set film Inside Llewyn Davis. The actress was an Oscar nominee for her leading role in the 2009 film An Education. Her other previous credits include Shame, Drive, and Never Let Me Go.
