Colorado Secede: Rural Counties Move to Form 51st State Amid Deep Division with Urban Areas on Gun Control, Renewable Energy
Several counties in Colorado are mulling over the idea of seceding from the Centennial State in order to form a 51st state.
At the forefront of the movement is Sean Conway, a commissioner in Weld County who believes that the values of the rural counties are at odds with those of urban areas and are being ignored, according to KPLR 11.
With a Democrat controlled legislature, Colorado is currently making moves that has drawn opposition from Republican constituents. Recent hot button issues that pushed some counties into secession discussions involve gun control and Senate Bill 252, which increases renewable energy standards in rural areas, according to the Inquisitr.
"Northern and Northeastern Colorado and our voices are being ignored in the legislative process this year, and our very way of life is under attack," Conway said, according to the Coloradoan.
Counties that are potentially interested in this movement include Weld, Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson. Some of these counties commissioners met this week at the Colorado Counties Inc. conference to discuses the idea and attempt to get it onto ballots come November, according to The Epoch Times.
"This is one of those cases where you don't get what you want, so there's no compromise," said House Speaker Mark Ferrandino (D), according to the Coloradoan. "It's my way or the highway - that's what we're hearing from Commissioner Conway. They don't like the direction things are going, even though the voters spoke in November. They're just behind the times in where Colorado is."
Conway told the Coloradoan that the new group of counties would all be rural, a fact which would give them common values and economies. The group has until Aug. 1 to get the topic a space on the November ballot.
