Sierra/Affinity released the unrated trailer on June 7 for the new comic thriller Filth, starring James McAvoy as a sex-obsessed cocaine-addicted corrupt police officer in Edinburgh.

The trailer notes that the project is from the creators of Trainspotting.

Filth is adapted by Jon S. Baird from the novel by Irvine Welsh, whose 1993 novel Trainspotting was adapted by Danny Boyle three years later.

The cast includes Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots, Joanne Froggatt, Gary Lewis, Martin Compston, Kate Dickie and Shirley Henderson.

The plot revolves around the character Bruce Robertson, portrayed by McAvoy. Robertson is a scheming and corrupt policeman in line for a promotion and will do anything to get what he wants. He is put on the case to solve a brutal murder. Threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox, played by Jamie Bell, Bruce tries to ensure their fall.

While he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past catches up with him and his missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his mental state.

The official synopsis of the film states:

"A bipolar junkie cop manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter."

McEvoy rose to fame in the U.K. in 2004 when he played Steve McBride in the successful 2004 U.K. TV series Shameless. He gained popularity with the worldwide release of Disney's adaptation of C. S. Lewis'sThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 in which he played Mr. Tumnus.

Filth is scheduled for release September 23.
