The Television Critics Association picked their nominees for this year's TCA Awards on Monday, with many returning favorites as well as surprising new additions.

The Program of the Year category features five dramas, including Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead in addition to new shows The Americans and House of Cards.

Despite being nominated in the top category, House of Cards and The Walking Dead were not able to get into Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Homeland and Mad Men took their place, joining The Americans, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

Alan Sepinwall and Dan Fienberg, two critics who vote in the organization, discussed the randomness of having two shows represented in Program of the Year but not Outstanding Drama. Fienberg said that The Walking Dead was the no. 1 show in the 18-49 demographic, so on popularity alone it deserved a slot, even if it wasn't considered one of the best dramas.

Additionally, Sepinwall noted that Netflix's House of Cards is a "trailblazer" for its streaming-only availability, so he understands the nomination.

Bryan Cranston and Matthew Rhys represent Breaking Bad and The Americans respectively in Individual Achievement in Drama. Joining them are three women from smaller shows: Vera Farmiga for Bates Motel, Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black and Monica Potter for Parenthood.

For Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, veteran comedies The Big Bang Theory and Parks and Recreation joined relatively new comedies Louie, New Girl and Veep. Four of those shows were represented in Individual Achievement in Comedy, with Louis C.K. (Louie), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) nominated with Lena Dunham (Girls).

For the New Program category, previously represented The Americans, House of Cards and Orphan Black took up three slots in addition to Elementary and The Mindy Project.

In the Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming category, old favorites The Amazing Race and Survivor are nominated against The Glee Project, Shark Tank and The Voice.

The 2013 TCA Awards will be presented on August 3.
