Jane Lynch announced that she is getting a divorce from her wife, Dr. Lara Embry, after three years of marriage, the actress told PEOPLE in a statement Monday.

"Lara and I have decided to end our marriage. This has been a difficult decision for us as we care very deeply about one another," Lynch said in the statement.

The Glee actress also requested privacy during this time. She made no mention of marital discord during her appearance at the Tony Awards in New York City Sunday. According to the publication, the former couple met at a 2009 fundraiser in San Francisco at which Embry was being honored. Their engagement was announced in April 2010.

"I'm thrilled. Great, it's really great. I never thought that this is something I wanted," Lynch said at the time.

Lynch added that the psychologist brought new meaning to her life.

"It's just the greatest thrill in the world to find somebody that you want to be with every day," she said.

Lynch and Embry were married on Memorial Day of that year in Massachusetts, a state that recognizes gay marriage. It was a small ceremony held at the Blue Heron restaurant in Sunderland, Mass. The store owner, Deborah Snow, shared her impression of the day after the ceremony.

"Lara's daughter was there, along with close, close friends of the couple. It was small, warm, intimate and very sweet. You could feel the love and friendship amongst the group," Snow said.

In a profile published in June 2010, The New York Times chronicled their love affair. They detailed how they struck up a long distance relationship after discovering they had a lot in common after meeting.

"We are both fascinated by emotional experience and are essentially hopeful people, but that temperamentally we express it differently," Embry said. "I tend to be more calm and reserved, and Jane is not. She's expressive and exuberant and gregarious."
