It was only a matter of time before Sean Spicer tried to get back into the good graces of the American people after being President Donald Trump’s front man AKA Press Secretary. And it looks like the 2017 Emmy Awards was the place he felt like he needed to do it.

He made a surprise appearance during late night talk show host Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue. Of course it would not have been right unless Spicer poked fun at himself when it came to one of the moments many U.S. citizens, including some in the room, gave him a major side eye. That moment was none other than Trump’s inauguration back in January when Spicer said it was the largest audience to attend the Presidential swearing-in event.

At the Emmy’s, Colbert asked if anyone could guess how many people would tune in to the television award show this year. That was clearly Spicer’s cue as he surfaced from backstage, clearly surprising many A-list actors and actresses who didn’t even care to keep their composure.

Spicer broke his silence and said, “This will be the largest audience to witness the Emmys, period – both in person and around the world.”

It provides a flashback moment when Spicer said of the inauguration, “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period.” Photos of the event went viral shortly after and compared the inauguration attendance of Trump’s to that of President Barack Obama’s inauguration back in 2012. Let’s just say Trump’s definitely didn’t make history. Not in a good way at least.

Colbert made the hilarious moment even more awkward when he said that the Wizard of Lies TV movie starring Bernie Madoff was another name for “The Sean Spicer Story.”

And he didn’t end there.

He also pointed out Melissa McCarthy, who was in the audience. She did an impersonation of Spicer on NBC’s Saturday Night Live last season.

“Melissa McCarthy everybody. Give it up,” Colbert said.

It might be safe to say Spicer was expecting this type of reaction and was completely okay with being the butt of the joke once again.

Spicer resigned from his position as White House Press Secretary back in July. The shocking move came just after Spicer openly disagreed with Anthony Scaramucci being named the Communications Director. Interestingly enough, Scaramucci only lasted ten days in the position as he was fired.
