The Sopranos actor James Gandolfini died on Wednesday while on vacation in Italy.

The 51-year-old actor was abroad in order to attend the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, according to Deadline. While some sources originally attributed his untimely death to a stroke, more recent report say he died from a heart attack.

Known for his award-winning role as Tony Soprano on the long running HBO mob drama, fans and actors alike have taken to Twitter to express their shock and sadness at Gandolfini's passing.

"RIP Jim Gandolfini. It was an honor to worth with you. You were a supreme actor & the kindest, sweetest man. You are missed," tweeted actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

"Massive blow to the acting community today... The passing of James Gandolfini. So talented. My heart goes out to his family!" stated Samuel L. Jackson.

"James Gandolfini gave us a character and performance that will stand the test of time. Whether he intended too or not. That's what happened," tweeted Jerry Ferrara of Entourage.

"James Gandoldini gave the greatest performance in the history of television. He was also a kind man. Condolences to his family," said Parks and Recreation's Rob Lowe.

The outpouring of support from the acting community was overwhelming. Together with fan's, supporters of James Gandolfini managed to push James Gandolfini, #RIP, and Tony Soprano all into the top trends on Twitter
