Despite a report that Kate Upton and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were canoodling over a romantic dinner in New York, Maks' brother is shooting down the rumors that the two are dating.

Speaking to EnStars, Val Chmerkovskiy said his brother and the blonde bombshell are "just friends."

"That's my brother. We talk a lot, and he hasn't said anything," Val said about the dating rumors at P&G's Everday Effect event on June 19 in New York. "They're just good friends."

The rumors about the pair began when Upton, who turned 21 on Monday, June 10, celebrated her milestone birthday with the Dancing With the Stars' "bad boy."

The duo were said to be spotted getting cozy during a dinner at Scalinatella in New York City.

"They were very canoodly," an eyewitness allegedly said. "It was a very intimate meal."

The gorgeous Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is currently shooting The Other Woman with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann. It's her first starring role in a feature film after making cameos in 2011's Tower Heist and 2012's The Three Stooges. Directed by Nick Cassavetes, the comedy is due out on April 25, 2014 and tells the story of a woman who realises she is not her boyfriend's primary lover. Also making a splash is Nicki Minaj, who plays Cameron's opinionated assistant at her New York law firm.

Chmerkovskiy, meanwhile, was previously engaged to fellow Dancing With the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff; they called it quits in September 2009. The exes are teaming up for three weeks in Forever Tango. The couple, who co-starred in a Broadway production of Burn the Floor in 2009, will reunite to perform the sensuous dance of lovers at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre in New York, on July 9-28.

"It is such an honor to have been given this opportunity to star on Broadway again," Smirnoff said in a statement. "Forever Tango is an incredible production and the Tango is an intense, sensuous dance of passion. Asking Maks to join me was in and of itself intense, so I figured by opening night, it would be explosive!"
