The action film Mile 22 starring Mark Wahlberg is getting a July 20 release, announced by STX Films. Still months away from its release, a sequel is rumored to be in the works already.

The Wahlberg-starrer is directed by Peter Berg, known for being the brains behind a handful of action-packed movies. For those who are in the know, this is not the first time the two had actually worked together.

In fact, Mile 22 is the fourth partnership between the two. Berg also directed 2016's Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day and 2013's Lone Survivor, all starred by Wahlberg. Clearly, the duo is back to share again some film prowess. Fans could also expect more from them, as this was reportedly the first of the franchise.

This would be a nod to last March's surprise announcement that the Ted star was planning to make Mile 22 a trilogy. He referred to the movie as "an intelligent, adult action film."

STX Films had also planned to develop Mile 22 in other platforms, including STX Surreal VR and STXtv, and announced that a sequel was already on the horizon. The July 20 release would have it head to head with Mama Mia: Here We Go Again! and Generation Wealth.

Mile 22 will focus on an intelligence officer who must safely take a police with key information out of the country. In order to do so, they must travel 22 miles to get to the airport. As expected, a lot of problems arose.

The news of the summer release comes after the production for Mile 22 is about to finish this week. The team had shot in several locations, including in Bogota, Colombia, and in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mile 22 also stars 64-year-old John Malkovich, The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan, wrestler and Furious 7 actress Ronda Rousey, and The Raid's Iko Uwais. It is cowritten by Lea Carpenter and Graham Roland. Wahlberg, Berg, and Stephen Levinson are the producers, while John Logan Pierson is executive producing the film.

Wahlberg's Preparations

Meanwhile, Wahlberg admitted in an interview with Men's Health magazine that he wanted to shape up for his role in Mile 22.

"I've been fat in all of Peter's movies. For this one I'm going to be down to 6 percent body fat," he revealed.

Recently, The Italian Job star came under fire for being linked to using steroids. Wahlberg strongly denied the accusations and insisted that it is "all natural."
