Seasoned comedian Hasan Minhaj is leaving The Daily Show to transition to a new hosting stint on Netflix's upcoming weekly talk show.

Global video streaming company Netflix has tapped Minhaj to host a new original talk show that will start late this year. The 32-year-old California-bred is bound to leave The Daily Show prior to the commencement of his new job.

Just The Right Fit

Minhaj will be the first Indian-American to play a lead host role on a talk show. Vice president for content Bela Bajaria said Netflix has chosen Minhaj among other potentials primarily because the company is looking to expand to other global markets. More than that, Minhaj is also recognized for his outstanding performances as an actor.

"I've been a big fan of Hasan's for many years," Bajaria said. "He's a phenomenal writer with a distinct point of view [and] he is a brilliant performer, who is hilarious both onstage and off. And more importantly, he isn't afraid to share his thoughtful voice and unique perspective," she continued.

There are no specifics about Netflix's brand-new talk show, but representatives from the company said Minhaj will be discussing cultural and political landscapes in the modern times on a more serious note.

While the show is yet to be named, Netflix said it has already committed to creating 32 episodes. Reports stated that Minhaj has produced the pilot episode.

Away From The Comfort Zone

Minhaj's new endeavor poses a stark contrast to his usual comical approach in The Daily Show. However, this does not stop the UC Davis alumni to joke about his upcoming show.

"I'm thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season — and like you, I cannot wait to find out who Putin picks this time," Minhaj said in a press briefing on Thursday.

Fans expect a huge gap in Comedy Central with Minhaj's pending departure especially that Michelle Wolf also left the network this summer. Meanwhile, Minhaj will temporarily remain Trevor Noah's senior correspondent until his formal transition to Netflix.

Fans can also catch Minhaj on an hour-long special titled Goatface to be released early next year.

Prior to the official announcement of the new show, Netflix produced a prologue titled Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King aired in May 2017.

Minhaj's show is Netflix's latest move in the comedy realm. The service recently offered My Next Guest Needs No Introduction by David Letterman and The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale.
