Meghan Markle is slipping into the role of a proper royal family member by dressing the part and paying tribute to the late Princess Diana.

Markle, 36, marked her first appearance with the Queen during the service for Commonwealth Day at the Westminster Abbey last Monday, March 12. Also present were future husband Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Dressed Like A Princess

During the event, the soon-to-be bride looked every bit the part of a royal wife in a beautiful white coat by Amanda Wakeley, a navy knee-length dress, and Manolo Blahnik pumps. It was her beret, though, that brings to mind the vision of her late future mother-in-law.

Markle's hat is by Stephen Jones, one of Princess Diana's favorite designers, according to Hello Magazine. The British milliner has made countless of berets for the late princess, especially since he has remarked multiple times that it is his favorite style of hat.

In an interview with Vogue last year, Jones recalled making a series of berets for Princess Diana when she was in her 20s. Each one had an inside embroidery of the royal's initials and the Prince of Wales' feathers.

"She really loved the world of fashion, and she liked the people in it," Jones says about the late princess. "It was an escape for her."

Markle's Style

Similarly, Markle is making a statement as she puts her own spin in royal fashion. Although Prince Harry's fiancée was dressed in classic garb for Commonwealth Day, she often shows up in trendier and hipper ensembles even to official events that puts her in the spotlight.

The newest member of the royal party has been spotted in ripped jeans, make-up free, and ditching stockings that the Queen reportedly favors.

"She's modern and on trend like we've never seen from a royal before," fashion blogger Christine OBrien-Ross of Meghan's Mirror tells Glamour. "A lot of what we see her in is just not what you would expect from someone in royal life: we know things about her, we can relate to her, she feels like someone who would be in our girl crew — but she's also not afraid to take fashion risks."

Both Princess Diana and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton are known for their influence in royal fashion, but Markle offers a much more modern look to the family picture.
