Lionel Richie's new album "Tuskegee," his first solo venture into country music, debuted Monday in the United States.

"Tuskegee" was named after the singer's hometown in Alabama.

"Tuskegee is one of the most special albums I have ever done in my life," Richie said on its website. "It's a moment in time when all of these artists got together and celebrated music."

The album features 13 duets with country icons such as Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Shania Twain. It also includes country covers of "Say You, Say Me," "Hello," "All Night Long," and "Easy."

"Everyone kept thinking 'Lionel's going country' And I kept saying no, no, no. You got it all wrong. My songs have already been country. I'm just showing up, putting the face on it. Claiming my kids," Richie said in an interview on the Today show this morning.
