Rose McGowan is facing up to 10 years in prison for cocaine possession. The actress and activist's legal troubles began in November of last year.

She's Being Targeted For Her Work

Charmed alum McGowan was indicted by a grand jury Monday for possession of a controlled substance, according to court records published online from the state of Virginia.

Her attorney spoke to PEOPLE about the charges, suggesting there may be something more sinister at play here.

"Rose steadfastly maintains her innocence. These charges would have never been brought if it weren't for her activism as a voice for women everywhere," he maintains.

McGowan's lawyer assured the publication that he and his client would be fighting the charges with a strong defense.

The Scream star was arrested back in November on foot of a warrant, issued in February of last year, for possession of a controlled substance.

She turned herself in, getting arrested and booked on the spot before being released on a $5,000 bail. McGowan is facing up to a decade in prison for the class 5 felony.

It's All Just A Big Conspiracy

The original investigation was launched after traces of narcotics were found in the actress's personal belongings. McGowan allegedly left her wallet behind on a United flight, which arrived in Washington on Jan. 20. Cops reportedly found several small bags of cocaine in her wallet.

Her lawyer claims McGowan immediately reported the wallet missing after disembarking her flight, but there was a five-hour gap in time when anybody could have accessed it and planted the drugs on her.

McGowan, one of the most vocal accusers against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, suggested on social media that her arrest was part of a conspiracy aimed at shutting her up.

"Are they trying to silence me? There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of HORSES-," she tweeted at the time.

Weinstein, for his part, vociferously denies all allegations against him. He was charged last month with rape and a criminal sex act involving two other women and was seen smiling for the cameras as police took him away.

No trial date has been set for McGowan as of yet and the activist continues to be a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement.

She was one of the first women to come forward with allegations against Weinstein and maintains that his team is attempting to damage her credibility with false charges.
