Kaitlynn Carter, 31, had a whirlwind romance with Miley Cyrus, 26, earlier this summer following her high-profile break up with Brody Jenner. In August, both women went on a trip to Italy where their relationship went from extremely platonic to something more.

In a published article by Elle entitled "Kaitlynn Carter on Her Summer of Self-Discovery," she revealed that she fell in love with Cyrus as if it was a force beyond her control.

"This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her," the 31-year-old began. "It wasn't quite that simple, of course. But it also wasn't very complicated either."

"Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her. But after reflecting on my romantic history, I realized that I've never really had a 'type," Carter added.

Before taking their relationship to a more romantic level, the two have already known each other for years. When their relationship went public, Carter and Cyrus were under a lot of scrutiny from the public. Their sexuality was questioned, and the validity of their relationship was challenged.

While the relationship was short-lived, Carter remained "eternally grateful" for their relationship, which opened her eyes to "this unexplored part of herself and for inspiring a new level of self-discovery and wonders at all the possibilities of life."

Carter, at the time, was discovering new means of feeling attraction for another person, describing how she found herself attracted to people in a way that seems disconnected from sex and physical qualities and more attached to a person's mind.

Instead of labeling herself, Carter chose to focus on her journey and acknowledged how this generation has become a "society of labels, even as we claim to be more open-minded than ever."

But the reality star's journey was not easy at all.

Aside from talking about her relationship with the "Malibu" singer, she also spoke about her union to Brody Jenner, which was not legally binding.

Carter revealed how Jenner became a "tireless sense of adventure."

When they had an exciting life together, Carter found that the couple could do some "growing apart as they have done growing up." She added that while she spends time alone and traveling a lot, she knew that it would soon be the "end" of her marriage.

When her relationship with Jenner ended, her "romance" with Cyrus was just getting started.

"It just happened, and it felt exactly right. Reflecting on our three-year friendship, I realized I'd always been drawn to her in a way I wasn't with other friends, but until that trip, it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense," she confessed.

Since Carter's relationship with Cyrus is now over, Kaitlynn is coming to terms with some things. She believes it was all "just a matter of chemistry" and that it had nothing to do with gender, admitting that she's not in a place to label her sexuality one way or another.

"It's something I'm still exploring and figuring out. Even I don't entirely understand what my experience for me going forward - and it's my experience," Carter ended.
