Country singer Randy Travis is reportedly recovering well after his brain surgery last week.

One of Travis' doctors said he is "awake and alert" after being admitted to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano in Texas on Sunday, July 7.

The 54-year-old singer has been diagnosed with idiopathic cardiomyopathy, Dr. Michael Mack said at a press conference on Monday. Idiopathic cardiomyopathy means that there is scarring on the heart muscle, which causes the heart to be weak and unable to support circulation without medical help.

Travis had a stroke while on life support after being admitted to the hospital, forcing the doctors to perform emergency brain surgery.

Dr. Gary Erwin added that Travis had responded well to the surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and said that he is "interacting with his friends and family and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy." He added that Travis would be staying at the hospital for the next two or three weeks as he begins aggressive physical therapy.

The doctors stressed that neither drugs nor alcohol played any part in Travis' condition.

Travis' fiancée, Mary Davis, was at the press conference and thanked everyone for their support.

"First and foremost, I just want to thank the friends, the family, the outpouring of love and affection that has shown up at the hospital and at home and through several different avenues of support," she said. "I know that those are prayers that have helped mend his heart along with the skilled hands of the physicians and doctors and nurses here at The Heart Hospital of Baylor in Plano."

News of Travis' condition spread fast on Wednesday as many of country music's biggest stars voiced their support for him. Singers tweeted that they were praying for Travis, including Rodney Atkins, Martina McBride, Jon Nichols and Lady Antebellum singer Hillary Scott.
