One Direction talked to Teen Vogue for their September 2013 cover story about girls, touring the world promoting their latest album and also their documentary This Is Us, premiering in August.

The five United Kingdom natives - Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik - formed a band after competing individually on season 7 of the U.K.'s The X Factor. They recently completed their Take Me Home world tour - 60 sold-out shows in 16 countries - with Tomlinson, 21, saying about life on the road, "It could definitely be a lonely job. I wouldn't be able to do this if I were on my own."

The boys live their lives in the public eye and nothing is off topic, especially their love lives. Styles, 19, dated Taylor Swift until the end of 2012 and Malik, 20, is dating Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards. Liam Payne dated Danielle Peazer for some time and before they split, he defended her via Twitter against jealous female fan posting derogatory comments about her. Speaking to the publication about his taste in girls, Payne said, "I like cute, quiet girls. My deal breaker is if they're a bit too in-your-face-then I just can't deal with that."

Rumors about their relationships are also vast, with This is Us director Morgan Spurlock saying, "It gets frustrating for them at times, because suddenly stuff gets printed that isn't even true. I saw an article that said, "Harry Styles demands Taylor Swift be taken out of the movie.' But by the time we started filming in January, they had already split up."

The cover story also dived deep in the working-class backgrounds in England and Ireland that the singers have. Before becoming a world-wide sensation, Styles worked Saturdays mopping floors at the W. Mandeville bakery in his hometown; Tomlinson flipped burgers at the Doncaster Rovers football stadium; and Malik was a waiter at his family's restaurant.
