Good Morning America on Wednesday released the first trailer to American Hustle with director David O. Russell in the studio to talk about the characters.

"[Viewers] can expect a wild world of amazing characters- people with their passions and their hearts- that was inspired by this wild event that happened back then," Russell, director of Silver Linings Playbook, said. "The theme of it is how much we have to be honest or con other people to survive in our own jobs."

The film focuses on political corruption scandals from the 1970s and features an A-list cast including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner. Russell said the project excited him because "everybody's playing someone they've never played before."

The trailer shows Brooklyn-based con-artist Bale in a mustache and parted hair style, his on-screen love interest and partner-in-crime Adams, who is portrayed as a vixen, and "New Jersey state assembly man" Renner. Con-artist Cooper reveals his perm and beard in the trailer, which also shows him wearing rollers.

"I permed my hair today," Cooper told E! News  back in January. "We did a camera test today and we were playing with the idea of him having curly hair."

Adams, who sports a one-piece swimsuit in the clip, is seen with her hands all over Bale. The 38-year-old red-headed actress also starred in The Fighter with Bale. Lawrence and Cooper are also together for the second time after starring in the Award-winning film Silver Linings Playbook.

American Hustle opens in limited release theaters on Dec. 13 before opening worldwide on Christmas Day 2013. Watch the trailer below.
