Dexter fans who are starting to mourn the end of the series should be excited to know that a spinoff of the drama could happen.

Showtime announced it signed Dexter show runner and executive producer Scott Buck to a two-year overall deal, according to a July 31 Huffington Post article.

At the Television Critics Association 2013 summer press tour, Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins announced Buck's new contract at the premium cable network's executive session.

When Nevin's was asked if a Dexter spinoff was a possibility, the President said "Of course, we announced an overall deal with Scott Buck today. Draw your own conclusions."

Nevins later explained that Buck's new contract doesn't necessarily mean a Dexter spinoff is actually happening, but just that conversations about the spinoff are going on. No plans are in place as of right now.

The Dexter mastermind is working on many other projects for Showtime, including an adaption of Matthew Specktor's American Dream Machine, which Dexter star Michael C. Hall will also executive produce.

For months, Nevins has talked about a possible Dexter spinoff focusing on the character Deb, played by Jennifer Carpenter. In April, he told The Hollywood Reporter that, "This is a core franchise to us and all options are on the table as to where it could go after this ... We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there."

Dexter is five episodes into its final season.

Dexter airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
