According to new rumors, the actor that will play Batman in Man of Steel 2 will be older and more experienced.

The production of Man of Steel 2: Batman vs. Superman was announced at Comic-Con in late July and the movie will feature Henry Cavill as Superman. Reports claim Cavill will face off against a yet-to-be-named actor who will play Batman.

According to Batman fansite Batman On Film, multiple sources have confirmed that the character will be older than anticipated, likely in his mid-40s. He is described as a "grizzled veteran" who has been on the job for a while.

The site cited actors such as Jon Hamm, Jim Caveizel, Josh Brolin and Jude Law as possible contenders for the character.

If their claim is accurate, then the previously rumored frontrunner to play Batman, Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin, 25, would be way too young to play the part.

Christian Bale played the shadowy superhero in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises, but he announced that he will not be reprising his role for Man of Steel 2. In a recent press release, Christopher Nolan, who directed the Dark Knight trilogy, spoke about Man of Steel 2 director, Zack Snyder, and where Batman was heading as a character.

"Whilst our Dark Knight trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack's fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction," Nolan said. "His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe, and we can't wait to see what Zack does with these characters."

The new film has been rumored to be an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns comic book series, which was written by Frank Miller. When Batman vs. Superman was announced at Comic-Con in late July, Miller was allegedly surprised by the revelation.

"Frank had no idea the announcement in San Diego was going to happen, so it did come as a surprise," a source told The Independent in a report published on Wednesday. "He's going to be meeting up with [Snyder] in the next few days to go over the plans for the Superman film so things should be clearer after that."

Man of Steel 2 is expected to be released in 2015.
