Star Trek Into Darkness is still fresh in Trekkies memories but rumors are already staring to pile up regarding the next installment in the sci-fi franchise.

With his commitments to Star Wars: Episode VII, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that J.J. Abrams will be able to helm another adventure of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

"If they want [Star Trek around 2016] and if Star Wars goes forward as planned, it would obviously be a conflict. It depends when this movie would happen," Abrams said, according to the Latino Review. "But in all likelihood if there is a movie sooner, there will be a different director on the film."

Originally there were two names floated as potential directors, Jon M. Chu of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Rupert Wyatt of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The Latino Review, who originally reported that Chu was on the short list for the position, has now stated that Chu's reps deny his involvement.

While Wyatt becomes an ever more likely directorial candidate, The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that writing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be penning the next voyage of the Enterprise. The pair worked on the 2011 Star Trek and this year's Star Trek Into Darkness and are returning once more to the franchise to pen the lines of Captain Kirk and his crew.

Star Trek 3 is rumored to have a 2016 release date.
