Daft Punk may be making a rare television appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25.

The electronic music duo was scheduled to appear on The Colbert Report Tuesday night but was forced to drop out on MTV's orders. Host Stephen Colbert explained the reason for the duo's cancelled appearance on Tuesday night's show.

"This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV," Colbert explained. "Well apparently, and this is a deeply guarded secret, so shhh . . . Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards -- spoiler alert. Don't tell anybody, 'cause fun fact, no one told me until 2:00 yesterday."

MTV has not officially announced that the Get Lucky duo would be performing at the VMAs, but Colbert's comments suggest that he was given the clearance to deliver the news.

If Colbert's comments are true, Daft Punk will be joining two headlining acts that have already been announced to be performing at the VMAs: Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

West is scheduled to perform his current single Black Skinhead, off his latest album titled Yeezus. This marks his seventh performance on the award show, matching Madonna's record for most VMA performances.

Gaga will be performing the first single off her upcoming album, ARTPOP. The single, titled Applause, will be her first televised performance of the song after it is released on Aug. 19.

The VMAs will be held live on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. on MTV.
