Drake is releasing his third studio album Nothing Was The Same in September and the rapper plans to have the best album of the year.

"I remember coming into this year thinking, 'How am I going to cut through all these people and shine?' I've never been part of a year when so many legends are dropping projects. How am I going to be seen? I'm going to be like the kid waving in the background in the photo with all of his tall relatives," he told XXL in its September 2013 issue.

Kanye West dropped Yeezus in June and Jay Z released Magna Carta... Holy Grail a month later. Both albums debuted at No. 1 on Billboard.

"And, I guess, those were my initial thoughts, and not to say that I haven't enjoyed some of the stuff that has come out this year, but it didn't pan out the way I thought it was going to," he continued.

The rapper, who covered the magazine's September issue, also said he wants his record to live up to people's expectations. He said of the album's release date, "On Sept. 17 I want people to be like, 'Oh, we were right.' "

One of producers who worked on Drake's album, hinted that such a reaction is probable.

"The album is amazing," Detail also told XXL in July. "Vocally, what's he doing is amazing."

Drake's third album will be the follow-up to 2011's Take Care. The rapper's sophomore album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard, as did his debut album Thank Me Later in 2010. Take Care also won the Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 2013 award show and sold more than a million copies in the U.S. alone.

Following the album's release, Drake will go on tour with singer Miguel and Future to promote it.
