Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton didn't turn out to be besties when the former was still with the royal family, and it was evident in numerous instances.

Royal fans expected Prince William and Prince Harry's wives to become BFFs because they were close in age and had been praised for their fashion choices. But the two turned out to be very different. Prince Harry and Markle had also spoken a lot of times about the royal family and mentioned several instances when the two duchesses' relationship cracks were obvious.

1. Meghan Markle's 'Baby Brain' Remark

In Prince Harry's memoir "Spare," he subtly talked about his wife and sister-in-law's relationship. According to him, Markle told Middleton she had a "baby brain" after the latter forgot something inconsequential.

Per the Mayo Clinic, baby brain is a term for "memory problems, poor concentration and absent-mindedness."

Markle's comment didn't sit well with Middleton, who allegedly found it offensive and, per Harry, demanded an apology.

"You talked about my hormones. We are not close enough for you to talk about my hormones!"

Prince William also sided with his wife and reportedly told Markle she made a "rude" comment, which was not appropriate in Britain. Markle reportedly responded, "Take your finger out of my face."

2. Kate Middleton Allegedly Grimaced When Meghan Asked For Her Lip Gloss

Prince Harry also disclosed in his book that before the former Fab Four's joint appearance at the 2018 Royal Foundation Forum, Markle asked to borrow the Princess of Wales' lip gloss, which he described as an "American thing" when she forgot hers. However, Middleton's alleged reaction surprised them.

"Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube," Prince Harry wrote, Page Six reported. "Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced."

3. Meghan Claims Kate Is Not A Hugger

The "Suits" star recounted her first meeting with Middleton in her and Prince Harry's Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan." She was reportedly wearing "ripped jeans" when the Prince and Princess of Wales came over for dinner.

"Like I was a hugger, always been a hugger," Markle said. "I didn't realize that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits."

"I guess I'd start to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside," she added. "There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door, and you relax now. But that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me."

However, Middleton seemingly reacted to her sister-in-law's statement when she went on a hugging spree during her royal engagements weeks later. A friend of Middleton also refuted Markle's claim.

"Kate's a big hugger," a friend said. "She is warm and friendly and greets everyone with a big hug and kiss. It comes naturally to her to be like that."

4. Kate's Awkward Texts About Princess Charlotte's Bridesmaid Dress

Still in "Spare," Prince Harry claimed Middleton sent Markle several text messages complaining about Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress, which was reportedly "too big, too long, too baggy." Markle told Middleton to take her daughter to the tailor at 8 a.m. to alter the dress. However, Middleton allegedly insisted that "all the dresses be remade." The Duchess of Cambridge allegedly discussed the issue with her wedding designer, who agreed with her suggestion.

The exchange of messages was reportedly emotionally taxing for Markle, who eventually asked Middleton if she was aware of the drama involving her father, Thomas Markle Sr., who canceled his attendance at the royal wedding. Middleton said she was aware but insisted on her problems with the dress, while Markle also insisted on having it altered by the tailor. According to Prince Harry, he found his wife "sobbing on the floor" following the exchange.

5. Meghan Claims Kate Made Her Cry In Oprah Interview

There were claims that Markle made the future queen cry over the bridesmaid dresses in the run-up to her royal wedding. Markle addressed the issue in her and Prince Harry's interview with Winfrey in 2021 and flat-out denied it, noting that the opposite happened, suggesting it was Middleton who made her cry.

"The reverse happened," Markle said. "And I don't say that to be disparaging to anyone because it was really a hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something."

She added that Middleton "owned it" and "apologized." The latter reportedly brought her flowers and a note, which was what she would also do if she hurt anyone. However, she was surprised by the reports that made headlines six or seven months later.

"I would have never wanted that to come out about her ever, even though it happened. I protected that from ever being out in the world," she added.
