Avatar will be coming back to theaters in a big way.

Creator and director James Cameron is slated to further explore the world of Pandora in a series of sequels that will play off the original 2009 film.

The innovative director scooped up two Golden Globes and three Oscars for the original movie, and now Fox Filmed Entertainment chief Jim Gianopulos has confirmed that Cameron has the chance to bring more of the sci-fi fantasy to life in as many as three new installments.

"Of course, Jim Cameron is finalizing the scripts- yes, that was plural- for the continuation of the saga that began with the highest grossing film in history- Avatar," Gianopulos said, according to Deadline. "We're confident these major cinematic events will amaze and enthrall audiences around the world."

Announced for release in December 2016, 2017, and 2018, the new installments will be filmed simultaneously starting in 2014. Helping Cameron to take on the monumental task are writers Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Shane Salerno, and Josh Friedman.

"Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience," Cameron recently stated in a press release. "In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's work, story, and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen."

Hopefully the sequels can stand up to the precedent created by the original.
