A 14-year-old girl is being charged as an adult for murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident resulting in the death of her mother and the injury of her stepfather.

Per Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, Carly Madison Gregg appeared in juvenile court on Wednesday where a judge certified her as an adult. Gregg, 14, is scheduled to make her first appearance in county court on Thursday.

Deputies were called just after 5pm on Tuesday regarding a shooting incident on the 200 block of Ashton Way within Brandon's Farmington Station subdivision, according to Bailey.

Bailey stated that upon arrival at the scene, deputies encountered Gregg's stepfather, who had sustained a gunshot injury.

The stepfather alleged that upon returning home, he discovered his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound inside the residence. Additionally, he claimed encountered his teenage stepdaughter, who was armed with a pistol at the time.

The victim alleged the teenager fired shots at him, resulting in him being struck in the shoulder. He says he then engaged in a physical altercation with the suspect, eventually disarming her. Subsequently, the victim claimed Gregg fled to the backyard, jumped over a fence, and escaped.

More deputies arrived at the scene, accompanied by the Mississippi Highway Patrol's helicopter. At approximately 5:35 p.m., Rankin County deputies located Gregg in close proximity to the residence and apprehended her without any complications.

"You can't fathom those kinds of thoughts. You just wouldn't think the child would do anything like this," stated Laruen Martinez, a neighbor. "It just feels like there's something missing. There's something wrong. It's like a level of caution that you don't think something like that would happen."

The Rankin County School District confirmed that Smylie served as a mathematics educator at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter was enrolled as a student.
