Building up hype for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and trying to garner as many votes as they can before the live show on Sunday, many artists uploaded onto social media photos asking for support to help them win the coveted Moon Man.

In other instances, the fans are reaching out on behalf of their favorite singers to gather as many votes as possible.

1) Justin Timberlake, Mirrors

The 32-year-old is having one of the most successful music careers in the past year. He released The 20/20 Experience in early 2013 and proved that he has not lost his touch despite his last album being seven years pior (FutureSex/LoveSounds). The new album opened with rave reviews by many but Timberlake did not stop there; he recently revealed the complete tracklist for his next album coming soon, The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2. The former N'SYNC band member is currently traveling the U.S. with media mogul and Holy Grail rapper Jay Z on the Legends of Summer tour.

Timberlakewill be a performer at the VMA, where he will also receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. He is tied with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the most VMA nominations this year with a total of six.

2) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz, Thrift Shop

The six-time VMA nominees will perform their marriage equality anthem, Same Love, at the awards ceremony. Sunday marks their VMA debut in a year in which they already rocked the MTV Movie Awards and the MTVU Woodie Awards. They are the first artist to play all three of MTV's major music events in a single calendar year, the network revealed. In addition to Video of the Year nomination, they are up for Best Hip-Hop Video for Can't Hold Us and Same Love is up for Best Video with a Social Message. Can't Hold Us, featuring Ray Dalton, is in the running for Best Hip Hop Video, Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Editing.

3) Bruno Mars, Locked Out of Heaven

Mars follows as the second most nominated artist at the VMAs. The 27-year-old is set to play the next single from his multiplatinum album Unorthodox Jukebox album. The four-time nominee is up for Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Male Video for Locked Out of Heaven. He performed that exact track at the 2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in New York City. Sunday marks his third VMA performance and he will play the Jukebox single for the first time on live television. To celebrate Sunday's performances, MTV Hits will feature a block of Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performances and music videos starting at 12 p.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 16.

4) Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell, Blurred Lines

Thicke, 36, stirred controversy when he first premired his music video for Blurred Lines, resulting in many complaining about the naked women featured in the video and the hinted lyrics making them seem submissive to men. However, the scandal passed and the track's VEVO music video has over 144 million views at time of publication. The video was at first banned from YouTube but returned and its unrated version is also available on the video-sharing website. Thicke tried to garner VMA votes on his own instead of relying solely on his fans by uploading the below photos to his Instagram account.

5) Taylor Swift, I Knew You Were Trouble

The 23-year-old's breakup ballad garnered her two nominations at this year's VMAs: Video of the Year and Best Female Video. She is currently touring the U.S. promoting her latest album, Red, with Ed Sheeran. The VMAs hold a special place in Swift's heart and not necessarily for the best of reasons. One of the most shocking moments in the history of the award show was in 2009. As she was in the process of accepting her award for Best Female Video - which was also her first VMA award - Kanye West jumped on stage to express his dissatisfaction. "Imma let you finish," he told her on stage. "But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

Swift uploaded the below video showing her spelling out V-M-A with Sheeran and Austin Mahone.

6) Miley Cyrus, We Can't Stop

Not only will this be Cyrus' first ever performance at the VMAs, but she is also the most nominated female this year. The 20-year-old is up for four awards: Best Song of The Summer for We Can't Stop, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and  Best Editing -- all for the same track. She uploaded the below photos on Instagram along with a video trying to get fans to vote for her.

Cyrus recently revealed that the name of the 2013 album will be Bangerz. She previewed the second single off her upcoming album, titled Wrecking Ball, in July.
