VH1 premiered season 5 of Basketball Wives on Monday and episode 1 introduced newcomer Tasha Marbury.

Marbury is a real-life basketball wife who is married to the New York-bred NBA player Stephon Marbury. The point guard has played for the New York Knicks, Boston Celttics and currently plays in China for the Beijing Ducks. The couple wed in September 2002 and have three children together--Xaviera Marbury, Stephon Marbury, Jr, and Stephanie Marbury.

Tasha shared in a recent interview why she decided to join the reality show, which has received flack for what was considered negative portrayal of Black women and for physical altercations among cast members.

"I decided to do Basketball Wives this year because I wanted to kind of step out of my husband's shadow, and I thought it would be a great experience," Tasha told Sista2Sistamagazine.com. "And to do something new." 

Tasha admitted she initially had fear and doubts about signing on to the show. She had witnessed previous season and wasn't sure if she would be well-received by her cast mates.

"I was really nervous, the first three or four times that I filmed," Tasha confessed. "I didn't know whether there was going to be fighting or things thrown at [me]. I just didn't know what to expect. I just prayed about it."

As a spoiler for the new season, the newest cast member also revealed that she didn't have any physical altercations with her co-stars during filming.

"I'm trying to walk a thin line where I'm not fighting or arguing, or saying the wrong words," she said. "I mean, I've said a few curse words, but I haven't had any fights!"

Basketball Wives stars Shaunie O'Neal (ex-wife of Shaquille O'Neal), Evelyn Lozada, (ex-girlfriend of Antoine Walker and Chad Ochocinco), Tami Roman, (ex-wife of Kenny Anderson) and Suzi Ketcham (ex-girlfriend of Michael Olowokandi).

A new episode of season 5 premieres on Mondays at 8/7 p.m. Central on VH1.
