To many people, twerking wasn't a thing until Miley Cyrus paraded across the MTV VMA stage shaking her booty.

Now the word "twerk" -- which means to dance “in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance" -- is everywhere. Oxford Dictionaries, which is responsible for the Oxford English Dictionary and other reference works, said that it would add twerk to its listings as part of a quarterly online update, The Associated Press reported.

Dance instructor and choreographer Tweetie uploaded videos to teach the uninitiated hip-hop dance moves. Her twerking video, posted last December, now has more than 13 million page views.

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Cyrus made headlines for twerking and grinding against singer Robin Thicke as they performed Blurred Lines. Leaving little to the imagination, Cyrus danced around stage in a nude bra and bootie shorts, as she stuck out her tongue suggestively.

"Robin thought it would be fun to include Miley, but he didn't realize how much she would overshadow him. This was his big night and big performance," a source told Us Weekly. "I don't think he would have done it knowing what it ended up like."

Another Thicke friend claims he still had fun though.

"He had fun and was fine with how it came out. He knew what they were going to do and thought it was fun and awesome. He had a great time," the source said.
